Most of us are aware of the damage that acid-based Teak Brighteners cause, not only to us when we handle the products without protection, but also to life below the sea when acid is washed overboard. Some people prefer to use washing-up liquid or detergents but sadly, these are still extremely damaging to marine life as they fertilize algae and rob the water of oxygen.
So, is there a marine friendly alternative that works?
The problem is that many of the eco products on the market simply don’t work. However, there are a few products such as EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) approved Yacht Shine which uses citric acid rather than hydrochloric acid that reportedly do. It may not remove heavy stains as well as classic acid-based Teak Brighteners, but overall it has been proven to be highly effective as well as being fish-friendly!
