The Monaco Yacht Show Review 2016
Super cars, jet-packs, luxury mini-buses, private jets, helicopters, submarines and of course, 125 of the best Super Yachts the industry has to offer in the most glamourous port in the world; the Monaco Yacht Show 2016 is all said and done and we at Global Services teamed up with our good friends at Cathelco to enjoy every second.
Although this was my first MYS, this was Global Services’ 22nd year in attendance and there is definitely a reason; according to the organisers, 28% of nautical suppliers, from yacht chandlers to suppliers of specific machinery were spread out over the 580 exhibitor stands, meaning that the MYS is easily the biggest collection of industry professionals on the calendar. Just by taking a walk through the show, shoulders can be rubbed with private yacht owners, future buyers of yachts and decision-makers from leading companies in the yachting and luxury sectors, hence why between myself and my colleague Will (who was also on his maiden MYS voyage) we covered over 20km a day on foot, which wasn’t bad as we had 20,000m² to explore.
Traditionally, MYS is where big industry news is broken as contracts, years in the writing are signed for all to see and Day 1 at the show was no different. Bremen based Lürssen Group announced that it will be taking over Hamburg based Blohm+Voss pending approval from the German Fair Trade Commission. What does this all mean I hear you cry, well, this means that Lürssen will be combining their 140 years’ worth of shipbuilding experience that has led to a portfolio of the biggest yachts in the world, namely M/Y Azzam and M/Y Dilbar with Blohm+Voss’ shipyard in Hamburg and newly acquired refit facility (with a whopping 200m dry-dock) in La Ciotat, France.
For the 3 days of the show, Global Services and our good friends at MarineGuard Systems hosted a lunch for a handful of the industries finest, this was a wonderful opportunity to sit-down and talk business (and other things) over great food with a wonderful back-drop, our Managing Director, Richard Gardiner had this to say about the show and the lunches: “The MYS is a busy few days so it was a great chance to talk to some key decision makers within the industry in a more relaxed environment. Overall the feedback we had was extremely positive and it was brilliant to hear that the industry is in a really solid position at the moment. Meeting with project managers and build teams affirmed the fact that there are a lot of new build projects out there that Global are excited to have the opportunity to get stuck into!”
As well as everything that went on in the day, we also had the night to enjoy and once the sun begins to set, our fantastically located stand transformed and allowed friends new and old to come and enjoy a drink. Although it was mentioned by some that the foot traffic this year wasn’t as high as previous years at only 34,000 (!) participants, we certainly didn’t notice, luckily our fridge was well stocked. On Day 2, or should I say, night 2, our partners Sylka Carpets co-hosted a party at the renowned ‘La Rascasse’ stating: “Co-hosting a party with our friends from Zytexx at the most well know venue in Monaco was really special for us, we had over 250 guests and got some wonderful feedback from customers regarding our existing product range and our new patterned 100% Lux Performance Fibre range, all in all we had a really positive show and can’t wait to see what the industry has to offer in 2017.”
All in all this was a wonderful show and we can’t wait to do it all again at METS on November 15th, 16th and 17th, please don’t hesitate to come and say hello to us in the ‘Superyacht Pavilion’.
